Biography

Denis Shapovalov (born April 15, 1999 in Tel Aviv, Israel) is a Canadian professional tennis player. He reached a career-high ATP singles ranking of No. 10 on September 21, 2020 and a career-high ATP doubles ranking of No. 44 on February 24, 2020.

Shapovalov won the 2016 Wimbledon junior singles title, and the 2015 US Open junior doubles title with compatriot Félix Auger-Aliassime. In 2015, Shapovalov and fellow Canadians Auger-Aliassime and Benjamin Sigouin captured the first Junior Davis Cup title for Canada in its history. He was a semifinalist at the 2017 Rogers Cup, beating Juan Martín del Potro and Rafael Nadal during his run. In 2018, he became the youngest player to make it into the top 30 since Richard Gasquet in 2005. Also, he reached the semifinals of the 2018 Madrid Open and 2019 Miami Open. In 2017, he won the ATP Star of Tomorrow and ATP Most Improved Player awards. In 2019, he reached his first ATP doubles final at the 250 Series in Stuttgart. Also in 2019, Shapovalov won his first ATP title by defeating Filip Krajinović in straight sets at the 250 Series tournament in Stockholm. He became only the third Canadian to win an ATP singles title, joining Greg Rusedski and Milos Raonic. The next month, he advanced to his first ATP Masters 1000 final by was defeated by world No. 1 Novak Djokovic. In 2021, he reached the finals of the ATP 250 Series Geneva Open and Stockholm Open, losing respectively to Caspeer Ruud and Tommy Paul. Shapovalov was named Male Player of the Year by Tennis Canada two times, in 2017 and 2019. In 2017, he also received the Lionel Conacher Award as the Canadian male athlete of the year.

Shapovalov was born in Tel Aviv, Israel, the son of Tessa and Viktor Shapovalov. His parents were Russian-Israeli citizens. His mother is Jewish, and his father is a Russian Eastern Orthodox Christian. Shapovalov has one sibling, his older brother Evgeniy, who was also born in Israel. The family moved from Israel to Canada before Denis' first birthday. He then lived in Vaughan, Ontario. He started to play tennis at the club where his mother was coaching when he was five years old. His mother Tessa opened her own tennis club in Vaughan, named TessaTennis, to help give him a home base to train and to teach the game to other juniors. Shapovalov attended Stephen Lewis Secondary School in Vaughan. He plays for Canada, but holds both Israeli and Canadian citizenships.
